For this project, I'd like to work with my bedroom. My bedroom is WAY more than my bedroom-it's my living room, work room, and a place where my friends gather to watch movies and hang out. I'm intrigued by beds specifically because I spend A LOT of time in my bed, I read, write, watch films, do Digital art, sleep... all in my bed, I almost never use my desk. So, for this project I'd like to recreate my bedroom and try to show how this interior space and its boundaries and functions change.
For my project, I'd like to create something physical and digital. I thought an interesting way to do this would be to create a diorama that is partially physical and partially projected. I'd like to create a to-scale version of my bedroom in all white, and attempt to make rudimentary 3D renderings of the major furnishings that I use most often in this space, then project pictures and films onto that space/those objects that depict the space, and how it changes.
I made two panoramas of my room, one while I stood in the middle and the other standing on my bed in the corner.
These aren't as telling as I hoped they would be, so I also took a snap shots of the 3 major spaces I use in my room (sorry for the quality)--hopefully, these help you visualize my space.
To start, I created a to-scale floor plan of my bedroom.
I started trying to render the major furnishings (those depicted in the floor plan) in the 123D Catch app, but after 9 hours of waiting for the renderings to be created in cloud land, I got the following the following 3D renderings of my coffee table and chair... Not exactly helpful.
Next I'm going to try to render these images in Tinkercad (although I'm hesitant, knowing how frustrated I get with that/related programs). I'm curious what it would look like to render the objects in 3D in photoshop, and then project them (will they look 3D without 3D glasses?).
After that, I'm going to use my DSLR to take photos of my room and experiment with projecting them. I'm also interested in taking video in my room and people in the spaces, and projecting those images onto the space to help depict the space/spaces and how they change.
Woah. This seems crazy complicated. Like it sound absolutely incredible if you can pull it all off how you say, but it sounds like you're going to have to devote every waking hour to this until the very end, and even then it's gonna be a lot to handle. I would definitely suggest going with the projection of the objects in your room rather than actual tangible 3D objects (because you seem to be having difficulty creating them the way you want).
ReplyDeleteI'm still not 100% sure I understand what your project is, but from the amount of time you've put into thinking it up and that you're going to put into creating it, I think it's very unique and very personal to you. I think my favorite part of what you have going on is the videos/photos that you're going to project on to the objects to show how their uses change. I think it's so clever and I love how we will be able to almost feel like we are there inside your room, with you. I'm curious how big your final project is going to be. I feel like you should try out different sizes, and Goldilocks style, find the one that fits just right.
But dude...either way this thing sounds incredible. I can't wait to see the finished piece!
I'm really excited to see what you do with this, it has so many layers and I'm super interested to see how you execute it. I like how you're incorporating so many different methods to portray one seemingly simple space. I also really like the distortions in the panorama shots, and the optical illusions of projection/distortion/physical space. Also there is alot of emotion in this already that I'm interested to see you explore, since we have this unique insight into you as a person and artist through the items in your room. Also this is going to definitely have some connection to its audience (i think so anyway) because I for one know that I use my bed/bedroom space similarly. So I think you're going to have some really great emotion and meaning to add depth. My only concern is that it is alot to take on, and I hope that stress doesn't cause you to lose any of the complexity/emotion/meaning already strong in this WIP.
ReplyDeleteAlso your portraits are absolutely stunning!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm excited by the idea of this project, and how you will represent how you re-create your living space. I do agree that that a bedroom (especially combined with a living room and work space) holds a kind of weight that can define you, either by how you have organized the space or the object you choose to have on display. Getting these objects in tinkercad would be quite the project, but i'm interested to see where you go with it.
