Animation Rough Draft

This isn't a complete rough draft. There is still too much I need to do to complete it and there was no way I would finish, even if I worked nonstop all weekend. Basically I have about 71 characters to do, times about 12-15, and I have only done about eleven.

I wanted to add the music but after effects wouldn't let me. I'm going to try to convert it to another audio file but I can't do it at the moment. But the song is called Sticks and Stone by Jonsi. Its a song on the How to Train Your Dragon soundtrack. I felt like it really fit with the video.

I realized that the background and the person will be in black and white and both will be pictures that I have taken (not drawn or taken from the internet). Halfway through the pictures will turn to color. I'm thinking of making the balloon Pooh is holding blue the entire time.

I was thinking when the pictures turn back to color that all the characters would be in color too but I won't have time for that.

I'm putting the link instead of the video because the blog won't let me upload a video. The animation is only about 30 seconds and the rest of the video is just the person and the background.

I am not keeping this background. I'm going to take my own pictures for the background over Thanksgiving break since I can't find the perfect pictures online. I also realized that I never colored in Courage so I'll have to do that too. Some of the animations need to slow down too. Also I will need to figure out where each character will stand in relation to the video. Will they  walk along the bottom or be up a little? I'm thinking a mixture of both depending on the characters.

  1. Wow, 71 characters? I really hope you can get all that done cause it seems like a whole lot!
I like that you are going to have the video go from black and white to color, but make sure the transition is at the right place for you. Also, is the main character that is walking along going to be more defined? It looks like just a sketch right now. I agree that the animations should slow down for sure. I also think that your characters should definitely be mixed up between the foreground and background and in line with the main character.

I'm interested to know what the meaning of this project is to you, since it is identity. It definitely seems personal, and I like that, but I can't wait to know why!
Good luck with finishing it, I hope you can do it all!

  2. like Emily, I want to know a little more about what this means to you. I feel like it is hard to judge at this point since I don't really know what criteria to judge it on. Right now, I kind of like how creepy and weird it is. That little sketchy main character (who i know you plan on cleaning up) has a sort of mysterious, grotesque quality to him/her that I find intriguing. Right now, it is like "Wtf is that thing doing and why is he surrounded by creepy cartoons?" The walking seems to imply journey or struggle...
Also what is the significance of the color change? Is this just for the visual effect or is there some meaning behind it?

  3. Cartoon characters relate fairly directly to identity, but maybe less personal identity and more so to identity branding. Like how we know these characters-- their basic personalities, plot lines, and physical features (which don't age, but may shift slightly with new renditions). There is something comforting in the static sameness of known characters. We personally change, the world around us changes, and yet they stay the same. We share the knowing of these characters because we all grew up with them, they were and are distributed on a global mass scale. We are unified in our consumption of them.

So what's that strange other character? My son, who is three and is confident in recognizing WHAT things are, said that it was a robot. I asked if he was a scary robot and he said "no, he's nice". Not sure why it's a "he" but I think the robot part comes from his box shape and the nice part is because he's walking along peacefully and the characters are coming towards him, rather then fleeing. I like the idea that he's a blob, almost looking for an identity or brand.

Not sure if I can speculate on the color, or not color, or the other changes you plan. I am interested in the white and black, hand drawn quality-- because it's simple and gets to the idea that these characters are basic and can be reproduced endlessly.
