Barry McColgan - Archive Project

I tried to work with various ceiling types and see how they work in scenes that didn't suit them. This isn't my finished work just a look on the idea I'm striding for.

  1. I like how simple each picture is. It isn’t cluttered with a bunch of stuff. I like the first one, with the green ceiling. It works really well because everything else is a neutral color except for the left wall with the green painting. The greens on both match and I really like it. On the others, some of the ceilings don’t seem to match well with the rest of the room. For example, the third room’s ceiling looks cool but the color is off. The room is a mixture of blacks, whites, and greys, and the ceiling is an orange color. It distracts from the rest of the room. When it’s in black and white though, it looks good. Although I’m not sure about the TV wall because the tiles don’t seem to work well with the organic feel of the room.

  2. The ceilings are too contained, or not physical enough in the space. If they were more sculptural, coming into the space, having more impact in the room, I'd be more interested in them. I also think they could contrast even more with the room-- they make too much sense still-- like they might just be real spaces. Maybe it's the mood too-- something more ominous would make sense in relationship to your original idea and general sensibility. Like the ceilings need to infect the rooms more-- Maybe instead of ceilings you might collect some images of viruses and bacteria and blend them with the ceilings? Or play again with the look of digital shapes or maybe even natural/dangerous shapes? Spikes, cave-like formations, crystals?

  3. I like the direction you have gone in so far on this project, the top two photos definitely look more completed than the others ones. I think the reason that these look more done to me is because it at a first glance if looks way more natural. Be aware of color combinations that people would or wouldn't use in their house because of clashing and such, this would be a step in the right direction to making sure that your work looks realistic.
